I bought my Rachel Allen breadmaker last year and have used it regularly since then. You do have to look out for misprints in the booklet (far too many to mention here), but have found it satisfactory for basic and French-style loaves. However, however much advice I took from the troubleshooting section, I just could not make a large wholemeal loaf that didn't over-rise and then sink in the middle - then I tried the small version. No problem at all. As you will notice, the small and large versions are not in proportion, so I adopted the small recipe for the large, as follows:

1 1/2	cups water

2	tablespoons skimmed instant dried milk

2 2/3	tablespoons oil

1/4	cup brown sugar

1 1/2	teaspoons salt

2 2/3	cups strong wholemeal flour

1 1/3	cups strong white flour

1 1/3	teaspoons yeast

If desired, add a pinch of vitamin C powder to help it to rise.

Result - a perfect loaf!

I have the rachel allen version - my first breadmaker and I was a bit sceptical. I find the digital display very very hard to read, and the recipes must have misprints...FOUR tablespoons of sugar?! even my sweet-toothed son found that too much. I'll keep experimenting, though this is getting expensive....

I have the Morphy Richards branded version of this breadmaker. I bought it because I liked the idea of having a normal-shaped loaf. Big mistake. I have been unable to make a tolerable loaf with this machine, in spite of having considerable experience with other machines.

My recommendation: don't buy it. Simple.
